My latest hardware problem

OS: Win7
MB: Gigabyte P965 DS4
Memory 4 GB: 2x Gskill + 2x kingston
Video: nvidia 8800 GTS 320M

Yesterday I was playing LoL and had pixelization during the game that crashed it. Also crashing the windows. Then I was thinking humm... video card dying. After boot I got the msg that 196.21 nvidia driver stopped responding and was recovered or something like that. Then I... WTF! How does that relate do video card dying? Pixelization in windows and I couldn't do shit (no pixelization in POST).

Off to safe mode and remove drivers. No problems in safe mode and so I removed drivers. Back to normal windows and damn bastard when to install back the 196.21 driver on his search for a driver. And I couldn't cancel it. Very nice indeed. Since it was going to install the drivers and then I end up having the same problems I decided to do a clean install.

After the clean install bang pixelization again. OK not drivers. Since I bought the kingston mem a few weeks ago I decided to remove them. Wiii... problem gone. I am off to start installing stuff bang... BSOD on video drivers. After some messing around and using Win7 mem check that I didn't know it existed mem came out without problems. BTW, I did also remove and insert again the video card at this point and problems still persisted. Also the only hardware I could get was new mem and another PC to test the video card but that would take like a day or 2.

Today I remember that I did have another PCI express x4 not the 16x I was using. Damn bastard video card covers 3 SATA entries using that slot. Woah. Problem solved. PCI express 16x was at fault. Saved from buying new hardware. Lost like 7h till now to install minimal things back (still haven't downloaded Windows updates).

Now was there another route of solving this problem. I think I made a wrong turn somewhere and that made me lost a lot of time and gained a lot of stress.

BTW, can anyone tell me what will be the effect of 4x PCI express on the 8800 GTS ?
I never understood the speeds of the slots... not sure what speed does the card support anyway.
