Are 3D effects ruining today's anime?

(If there was an older thread about this one, please merge this with it since I'm a newbie here)

I hate to start a serious discussion thread but its already get into my nerve long time ago. I remember how craptular was 3D effects in Initial D. 3D cars in 2D lane don't mix. Back then 3D effects are just cheap gimmicks and only few other shows did the same. Now that trend is back. Almost every today's shows now have 3D(and cel-shaded) cars. Not just cars but also fans(rotating ones of course), bottles, even close-up effects.

I can tolerate some 3D effects in action-based anime like High School of the Dead and Iron Man but it is annoying to see them in more romance-based shows like Yosuga no Sora(yes this one have lots of 3D effects). Don't get me wrong. I love YnS but just because I hate few things about it doesn't mean I hate entire show.

When speaking of 3D effects, I also surprised to see Gundam 00 had relatively few 3D effects despite being sci-fi mecha show(which I believe needs 3D effects more). It rather use it sparingly, unlike most non-Sunrise shows(except SD Gundam series, which made for kids anyway). I wonder why other studios are crazy for 3D effects. Cheaper perhaps? Or more flashy than 2D ones?
