Lately, there's an upsurge of stories with Anti-Magic leads since Gakuen Alice (or probably even earlier than that), one of the most prominent probably is To Aru Majutsu No Index.
The question: How does anyone here perceive Anti-Magic:
a) The most overpowered ability ever;
b) The suckiest ability ever;
c) Just a so-so ability; or
d) You don't probably know what Anti-Magic is.
My arguments for Anti-Magic:
Spoiler for What's Anti-Magic?:
In a universe filled with superpowers, each one of these have unique attributes. Super Strength, Super Speed, Invincibility, Intangibility, Telekinesis, Mind Control, Teleportation, Kamehame Hadouken, Sorcery, Fire/Ice/Lightning, you name it. And believe it or not, the ability to negate all of these is one of them.
Spoiler for It's just a so-so ability:
It's actually pretty common, it doesn't just appear that often, at least as an inherent trait. Joshua Coldrake, Mikan Sakura, Kousuke Ueki, Louise de la Valiere, Touma Kamijou, you name it.
Spoiler for It's the most useless superpower ever:
One day, you woke up in a universe filled with superpowers, but what's this? You don't have any kind of superpowers known in that universe. So, good luck not encountering superpowered bullies on your journey. Or worse, somebody who can reflect all your physical attacks at twice the power. Ouch.
EVEN worse, you're The Load of your team because you practically can't do anything to help your teammates. That's right, you can't wield a sword, you can't cast spells, and I'm pretty damn sure you don't know how to fight. All you can do is stand in there and chock up red and blue things on them after a battle. Assuming your team EVEN survives. If not, then, all you can do is just run away.
And GOD HELP YOU if you die or get injured, because NO WHITE MAGIC will work on you! Yep, that's right. No instant healing spells, no status buffs, and you can't go back from the dead!
And THAT IS NOT ALL. Anything magical would instantly disappear like dust blown by the wind, so it would definitely suck if you can't touch anything magical, such as an important artifact for your quest, magically bound rocks which can wipe out everyone if you're not careful, and magical clothing worn by your female party members.
So, yeah, Anti-Magic sucks.
Spoiler for It's the most broken superpower ever:
So here's the worst part of your adventure. Your party is up against pretty much the most powerful being in the universe. No attacks can hurt him, because he can send them back to you at twice the power. And oh, he can also one-shot almost anything at will.
But wait, what is this? His attacks don't work on you. He just casted his one-hit kill attack at you about a hundred times and yet it still doesn't work. Well, good news for you, kid. You've just unlocked the most broken ability ever known.
With it, you can disable the enemy's protective wards with just a touch while your magical party members have to incant overly long chants just to do the same. With it, you can remove the magical chains that have rendered your friends unable to fight properly. And oh, with it you can punch out the living snot out of a god. That's right. A FREAKING GOD!
So how exactly can you make it more useful? By learning swordsmanship and/or kung-fu, of course. With all these, you can now act as the party tank and at the same time cast anti-magic barriers and magic-dispelling attacks to make yourselves completely invulnerable to almost anything other than physical attacks. Or even that.
Physically oriented enemies? Don't worry. Your swordsmanship/kung-fu training can help you with that.
