laptop can't handle 720p; need recommendations

My Dell Inspiron e1505 can't play 720p without major lag. Specs are:
-Intel duo T2400 1.83 GHz
-ATI Radeon X1400
-1GB RAM

I'm assuming the processor isn't good enough. Unfortunately large bit-rate 720p has become so common that SD is no longer a choice for some fansubs (why does anime even need to be HD?). My Dell is just over four years old, so I suppose it's time to replace it.

I would love to buy something like the Gateway NV5924u:
-Intel core i5-430M 2.26GHz
-4GB RAM
-ATI Radeon HD 5650 1GB VRAM

But it's sold out and probably discontinued. So are its Acer equivalents. I can't find any other ~$800 laptops with similar specs currently being sold. (The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 was the same price and has better specs, but I hear it's display has major issues.)

Can anyone recommend other laptops? I like my computers to last 3-5 years, so it would need to be able to play any games coming out now and over the next year (I don't play games until they're a few years old) and be able to play 1080p (but I'm hoping it doesn't become common in the next 5 years). Would this model be able to handle those tasks?
Acer Aspire AS5741G-5062

It has an i3 + ATI 5470. How much worse would that combo be than i5 + ATI 5650?

Regardless of specific cpu's and graphics cards, I want:
-around 15.6" screen (might consider full 17")
-1366 x 768 resolution (my vision is terrible: I need dpi increased to 160% on my Dell with 1680 x 1050 res)
-something that can handle modern games and video playback while multitasking.

Also, is the following statement true? 720p and 1080p are nearly indistinguishable on 1366 x 768 native resolution, because the 1080p would need to be scaled down to 768 which is pretty much the same as 720.
