While I do find the idea of internet-only television alluring, I'm locked into one more year old cable service with Comcast. As such, I have a small box, but no DVR. Since I just finished digitizing the last of my old VHS tapes (and believe me, I DO NOT want to relive that experience), I want to get a DVR. However, I hate the idea of having to pay a company (cable provider or otherwise) to basically rent the unit and THEN have to pay for a subscription fee on top of my cable bill. Furthermore, the only aspect I find appealing about TiVo is the ability to copy recorded shows to a USB or DVD.
Is there a subscription-free DVR out there that also allows me to copy recorded shows to an external device (to be accessed by an actual computer later on)?
