Harem anime: 1 continuity or multipe continuities

I notice recent harem animes have started using multipe continuities, where the plot either resets to a certain point (even to the start) and branch.

Personally I prefer the old way, having resetting and branching plot lines kinds of breaks the cohesiveness of the characters - it's like they have multiple personalities.

Maybe I just an old man who can't move on with the times. :(
