In 658-660 General Abe no Hirafu was ordered by the Emperor of Japan to invade Hokkaido island and occupy it in order to increase the territories under the control of the Japanese Empire.
General Hirafu went to Hokkaido with a large army and navy to occupy the island, and he had a fleet of battleships armed with catapults that could hurl large stones or incendiary bombs called molten iron fire pots.

After the campaign of General Hirafu's expeditionary forces was over, his trophies included at least 2 live bears, 70 bear hides, and 353 prisoners.

The Japanese in particular invented the water scoop mill to power hammers in forge mills, saws in sawmills, wool textiles in fullers, stamp mills in mining, and pottery in pottery mills, and this allowed them to produce goods on an industrial scale, with the time period from 500BCE-1700 being the 1st Industrial Revolution, a technological revolution that turned the entire Eurasian landmass into a large floating factory and gave the empires of Asia and Europe the power to conquer and subjugate the tribal socities of Eurasia and later the tribes in the Americas, Africa, and Australia.
