Large Cast

I'm looking for an anime with specific qualities.

I really enjoy series (preferably long) that sport large and well-developed character casts. Colorful personalities that don't always stick to cliche types. A good, slightly-convoluted plot that makes you think. A host of organizations and bad guy/good guy teams.

An anime that makes you cry when a character you like dies.
